A Love Letter to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende is a diamond in the rough.

Nestled in the Mexican highlands, San Miguel everything you’d hoped Mexico would be and then some – colorful and vibrant, yet low-key. It’s all of the charm, minus the masses of tourists you’ll find in many places along the coast.

In recent years, San Miguel has become quite the cultural hotspot, and with good reason. It was even voted the number one city in the world by Travel + Leisure – not one, but two years in a row.

We had the pleasure of traveling to San Miguel de Allende in the spring for the wedding of our friends, Ellery and Trace. Armed with our festive black tie best and ready for a good time, we made the journey to Mexico.

They say that the best places are the hardest to get to, and San Miguel is no exception. In fact – it’s arguable that the difficulty of getting there has preserved its magic.

A three hours’ drive from Mexico City or two from León, the colonial city of San Miguel is an oasis in the desert. As soon as you arrive, your patience will be rewarded for the planes, trains and automobiles it took to get here.

So what exactly makes San Miguel so special?

For starters, the city is a fusion of the old world and new – colonial architecture meets modern minimalism.

Narrow cobblestone streets lead to vibrant courtyards draped in lush greenery and the most beautiful flowers you’ve ever seen.

The warmth of the Mexican hospitality exudes into every aspect of the city. Spend the weekend in a stunning colonial-era casa, complete with a chef that whips up fresh guacamole or huevos rancheros.

Or if you’re in the mood for a splurge, check in to one of the many stunning boutique hotels that are worth the visit for their design alone.

Truthfully, there is no bad time to visit – San Miguel is lovely year round.

The city’s position at a lofty 6,000 feet above sea level yields a very temperate climate, especially for Mexico. Think sunny, warm days, minus the soupy humidity that’s typical to the tropics.

What is there to do in San Miguel de Allende?

If you’re looking for attractions per se, well – this may not be the place. The allure of San Miguel is in it’s ambiance.

It’s a place to simply be, and an itinerary isn’t needed to truly soak in the magic of the city.

Sip tamarind and ginger margaritas at a rooftop bar as the sun sets over the desert. Sample the delicious local cuisine like shrimp tostadas, stuffed poblano peppers and chicken with mole sauce.

Wander the boutiques and markets searching for striking hand-made fabrics, jewelry and furniture.

Rent a four-wheeler for an adventure in the desert, or even soar above the city at sunrise in a hot air balloon.

Have you packed your bags yet?

And hurry – head to San Miguel de Allende before everyone else does. This gem won’t stay a secret for long.

Cheers,

Meredith
